Books:
Catalog of Coins of the Roman Empire
in the Ashmolean Museum, Part I; Augustus (c. 31 BC - A.D. 14),
by C. H. V. Sutherland and C. M. Kraay. Hardcover, folio. 1975
1507 coins of Augustus, or struck in the time of Augustus,
almost all illustrated by casts. Bascially SNG format, with very little
discussion. Good indicies. Also very strong for Spain (Roman
provincial), Mauritania (Juba, etc.), and Roman Provincial of the East
(all only the time of Augustus).
If you collect Octavian/Augustus, this is essential.
Of course, BMC I and RIC I.
For a very extensive discussion of the development of the power of
Octavian/Augustus and the corresponding coins, see Coinage in Roman Imperial Policy by
C.H.V. Sutherland (1951) which was later followed by his The Emperor and The Coinage (1976)
which goes over a lot of the same ground. Many relevant coins are
illustrated in each.
The Cistophori of Augustus, by
C. H. V. Sutherland. 1970. Hardcover. RNS Special
Publication 5.
A complete discussion of his cistophori, including
36 page plates and 134 pages of extensive discussion of these few
issues.
